this is not a complete history of modern computers & software; if it were, this video would probably run for a half-hour. instead it has all of the most relevant details as a comprehensive justification for the technology & software that exist today

common misconceptions:
•bill gates did not invent dos, not even ms-dos (he actually bought it from somebody else, & that person wasn't the inventor either). the inventor of dos is gary kildall, except confusion may arise from the fact that he called his invention cp/m, & then everybody else called it dos

•steve jobs did not invent the graphical user interface, nor was apple the 2nd party to implement a gui: the graphical user interface was invented by xerox parc in 1972. furthermore, rob pike of bell labs created the blit, the 1st graphical "multiprogramming" mainframe terminal in 1982, a year before jobs came close to finishing lisa

•al gore did not invent the internet. the internet was invented by darpa (then known as arpa) in 1969. until the late-1970's-to-early-1980's, the internet was known as arpanet
